Well, we was playin’ a show
Down South one day – along the Rio Grande
When a rustler rushed up on me – and he offered to shake my hand
“Boys,” he said – and he smiled – seemin’ like he was a friend
“Would you mind too much if I pick that thing?”
An’ the stranger started right in

Yeah, he sits right down
Pulls out a pick – and strums once or twice
Then he kicks right in – with a toothless grin
An’ he starts pickin’ those strings nice
His fingers strum – an’ he picks ‘n pulls
Attackin’ them there strings
I tell you friend – I’ve never heard
A guitar – that sings

Except for “My Old Man”
He taught me – when I was a lad
How to pick these guitar strings – like no one ever has
See, I practiced – and I practiced – and I learned me all he knew
‘Til one day – The Old Man smiled and said
“Ain’t no one picks like you!”

Well, my stranger friend – he finished up – and laid down my guitar
He looked me in the eye and says – “Well fellas, there you are!
I guess you’ll never hear no one – can play guitar like me!”
I just smiled – grabbed my guitar – “I guess we all will see!”

So I kicked right in – fingers a blazin’ – up and down them strings
His jaw just dropped – and I could tell – he’d never seen such a thing
The music played – and my guitar sang – like no one’s ever heard
‘Til I heard him gasp – he just walked away
Never said one more word

Well, this story’s true
Been often repeated – time and time again
Folks hope their pickin’ can keep right up
But I learned from My Old Man
So it don’t matter – folks can try
And play the best they think they can
They ain’t never gonna play like me
Because I learned from My Old Man
And ain’t no one’s ever picked guitar
Or played like My Old Man
