about

“East Street Stranger” was a new act in development during the 1980’s, designed to feature the distinctive voice and vocal deliveries of North Carolina front man and lead singer Billy George Hairston (tracks 6, 7 & 11).

This song, "Johnny Got It" – along with each of these three original songs – was prepared for the soundtrack of an upcoming new film, “Empty Room.”

As Hollywood scripts and productions often do, however, this project failed to materialize. Yet, the instrumental performances from these five future players who would later form The Front Porch Country Band remains an early hallmark of their musicianship and versatility.

Johnny got some money – man he got a lucky strike
You know it’s kind of funny – man that kid turned out all right
Dancin’ down in Memphis – hey way down in New Orleans
He’s tearin’ up the carpet – man you know just what I mean

Johnny got a lady – man that kid is turnin’ heads
You know he drives ‘em crazy – man that kid can knock ‘em dead
Glidin’ down the highway – oooh if you could see him now
But he ain’t lookin’ back – ain’t no one gonna stop him now

Rockin’ to the rhythm every night and day
Shakin’ to the sound and everything’s okay – that’s okay
Yeah, that’s okay
Movin’ to the music every day and night
Steppin’ to the beat and everything’s all right – that’s all right
Say, that’s all right

Johnny got a contract – man that kid can sure move fast
The word is on the street now – man you know his luck can’t last
But he don’t even notice – hey that talk can slow him down
He’s headed for the top – ain’t no one gonna stop him now

Rockin’ to the rhythm every night and day
Shakin’ to the sound and everything’s okay – that’s okay
Yeah, that’s okay
Movin’ to the music every day and night
Steppin’ to the beat and everything’s all right – that’s all right
Say, that’s all right

Johnny got some money – man he got a lucky strike
You know it’s kind of funny – man that kid turned out all right
Glidin’ down the highway – oooh if you could see him now
He’s headed for the top – ain’t no one gonna stop him now
